Upcoming Elections

Parish Council elections will take place in Carlisle and the rest of the Cumberland Council area on Thursday 4 May 2023.

To be eligible to vote in these elections you need to be:

  • living and registered to vote at an address in Carlisle
  • Over 18 years old
  • British, Irish, a Commonwealth citizen or a European Union citizen (living in the UK).

If you are not already registered to vote, you must register by April 17 2023 to be eligible to vote in these elections. You can register to vote online.

If you are unable to, or don't want to vote in person (by visiting a polling station), then you can either:

A UK Parliamentary Election was held on Thursday 12 December 2019.

The elections for the European Parliament were held on Thursday 23 May 2019. The European election in the North West was coordinated by the Regional Returning Officer, Joanne Rooney OBE, Manchester City Council. The elections within the Carlisle City Council area were administered by Dr Jason Gooding, the Local Returning Officer Carlisle City Council. The consultation on local reorganisation in Cumbria meant that Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council elections didn't go ahead as planned in May 2021. However, elections for the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner and vacant seats on local councils were still held.

In Carlisle, there was three Carlisle City Council By-Elections - Cathedral & Castle ward, Harraby South & Parklands ward and Newtown & Morton North city ward.

There was also a Cumbria County Council By-Election in Brampton division. The elections were held on Thursday 6 May 2021.

A By-Election for Longtown & The Border (Carlisle City Council ward) was held on Thursday 5 May 2022.

The election for Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner was held on Thursday 6 May 2021.
