How to dispose of your refuse waste

Depending where you live in Carlisle your waste may be collected in different ways, here is a guide on how to dispose of your refuse responsibly

Refuse bins

Black - Refuse bin icon

  • Do not put additional waste out next to your bin. This may be regarded as a fly-tipping or littering offence for which you may be fined.
  • Your bin may not be emptied if the lid is not closed, if it is too heavy or there are bags of waste on top.
  • Do not put recyclable items in your bin. Use your separate recycling containers for those.
  • Do not place any rubble/building or any non-household waste materials into your bin.
  • Place your bin out by 7am on collection day (or night before - no sooner) and take back in promptly after emptying
  • If you miss your collection or have any additional waste, you can dispose of it free of charge at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (Bousteads Grassing, Rome Street or Townfoot Industrial Estate, Brampton) -restrictions may apply.
  • Mark your house name/number on your bin.
  • None of Carlisle waste is landfilled - it is taken to a Mechanical & Biological Treatment Plant (MBT) processing facility and the small proportion of waste left after treatment is incinerated to produce energy.

Using your gull-proof sack

Black - Refuse bin icon

  • No additional waste, builders rubble, non-household waste or recyclable materials in your gull sack. Extra refuse bags may be regarded as a fly-tipping or littering offence and you may be fined.
  • Place your gull sack out by 7am.
  • Your gull sack may not be emptied if it is overflowing.
  • Please close the lid of your gull sack and use strong refuse sacks (not carrier bags/loose waste).
  • Mark your house number on the side pocket of your gull sack and take it back in as soon as possible after emptying.
  • Extra waste can be taken free of charge to a Household Waste and Recycling Centre.
