Benefit Overpayments

An overpayment is any amount of benefit, which has been paid to you but you were not entitled to receive.

Overpayments happen for various reasons and in most cases we will usually expect you to pay us back.

If it is a Council Tax overpayment this will be taken out of your Council Tax account and you will get a new Council Tax Bill with more to pay.

If it is a Housing Benefit overpayment and you still get Housing Benefit deductions will be made from each week’s benefit to recover the overpayment, up to the legal limits.

We may ask your Landlord to repay the overpayment if they received the payments.

Alternatively deductions can be made from any Department of Works & Pensions benefits or we will send you a bill.

If you have any queries regarding an overpayment contact the Overpayments section on 01228 817228.
