Young Enterprise
Young Enterprise North West is part of a
nationwide charity who's mission is "to inspire and equip young
people to learn and succeed through enterprise".
All Young Enterprise programmes are based on
the principles of learning by doing, supported by volunteers from
business who work with the teachers and students . Some Young
Enterprise programmes offer students direct experience of
enterprise through working together to run their own real company.
Others are structured around workshops, challenge events and
classes, using games, activities and role-play to help students
develop skills and capabilities for enterprise, business and the
world of work.
Here in Carlisle and the surrounding area the
Company and Team
programmes, where students set up their own real
business, had 13 different schools and colleges and over 160
students participating this year including Newman School, Caldew
School, Trinity School. Richard Rose Academy and James Rennie
School. During the year students have attended workshops at the
Hallmark Hotel, held Trade Fairs to sell their wares at the Fratry,
next to Carlisle Cathedral and attended a black tie dinner and
presentations evening at Carlisle Racecourse. The North Cumbria
winners of the Company Programme were Smart Heart from the Nelson
Thomlinson School who went on to represent North Cumbria at the
Cumbria finals with Gemini from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School.
The newly elected Mayor of Carlisle, Mary
Styth invited the North Cumbria winning students, teachers and
volunteers to a reception at the Civic Centre recently, where Emma
Pearson was presented with a plaque and after refreshments everyone
was taken on a tour of the council chambers.

from Nelson Tomlinson School won the Student of the year award at
the North Cumbria finals, presented by Cllr Marilyn Bowman and Paul
Walker. Emma went on to win both the Cumbria and North West Student
of the Year titles!
