Chaperone service
All Chaperones must be licensed. They are required to undergo an
enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) disclosure before undertaking
sole supervision of children.
In Cumbria, chaperones are licensed by Cumbria
County Council Children's Services (external
link).
A child must be supervised by a licensed Chaperone or
Matron if engaged in:
- any performance on the stage
- any production for the media (including modelling)
The Chaperone will legally take on some of the responsibilities
of a parent. The Chaperone should ensure the child:
- performs within the terms of his/her performance licence;
- is properly cared for at all times;
- has access to meals, rest and recreation.
The Chaperone must provide the highest level of care possible
under the set circumstances. Up to 12 children can be under a
Chaperone's care at any one time.
A Chaperone in not needed if the child is in the care of
their parent or a teacher.
