Children's Hospices
Eden
Valley Hospice (external link) was established in October
1991 to provide specialist care and support for those in the
community with terminal or life-limiting illnesses. The hospice
offers a day care centre offering practical help and support for
adults. A twelve-bedded “In-Patient” residential unit and a
Children’s Day care unit catering for up to six children with life
limited conditions a day.
The hospice, a member of the Association of Children's Hospices,
provides specialist *palliative and medical care in addition to
complementary therapies, chaplaincy and bereavement support for as
long as necessary. Around 300 families in Cumbria and the south
west of Scotland have a child who has a life-limiting condition.
They could all benefit from the services a Children's Hospice can
provide.
The estimated cost to provide a Children's Hospice service is
£800,000 a year. About £100,000 of this comes from the local
Primary Care Trust. Eden Valley Hospice has the challenge of
fundraising the remaining £700,000 every year.
