In addition to Made in Cumbria Farmers’ Markets every first Friday in the month, the following events are planned for Carlisle city centre and venues close by in 2014:

Easter International Market

Date: Wednesday 16 - Monday 21 April

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

The return of this popular market with its gifts, flavours and aromas from all over Continental Europe and beyond. You will be spoilt for choice with such a wide collection of stalls and products from Thailand, India, South Africa, France, Germany, Spain and so many more!

Pirelli Carlisle Richard Burns Foundation Rally

Date: Saturday 3 - Sunday 4 May

Venue: Carlisle City Centre


The Start and Finish will be in Carlisle city centre. This is the first year both Start and Finish will be there and if last year’s spectator numbers at the Start are anything to go by it will be well attended.

The Rally HQ at Brunton Park will open to the public from Friday (2 May) morning onwards.

The cars will arrive in Carlisle city centre at around 9.30am on Saturday 3 May (the first car leaving the city will be at 10.30am) and the last car will leave the city at approximately 12.15pm. Then after the race, the first car back in the city will be around 6pm.

To enhance the Pirelli Rally we have organised a family fun day event for Saturday 3 May:

  • 13.00pm        Curios Cargo – Lollipop Patrol
  • 13.30pm        Fair Play – Space Cadets
  • 14.00pm        Bread & Butter Theatre

Throughout the day Langholm Pipe Band will be entertaining the crowds.

12.00pm – 18.00pm – Giant Scalextric in the Old Fire Station Arts Centre - FREE fun for all ages!

On Sunday (4 May) the first car should be arriving around 12.30pm, the finish ceremony should be around 2pm.

Zing a local community choir will be performing to the crowds on Sunday too.

A week filled with music will make Carlisle’s city centre a vibrant and attractive place to visit.

Upperby Gala

Date: Monday 26 May 

Venue: Hammond's Pond, Upperby Park, Carlisle

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Admission: Free

The Upperby Gala is a very popular family event set in parkland to the east of the city. Professional entertainers provide the fun in a main arena. Money is raised for local charities on a selection of stalls.

Armed Forces Day

Date: Saturday 28 June

Time: From 10am

Venue: City Centre

Armed Forces Day is a national celebration of the UK's Armed Forces - past, present and future. The free city centre event will include stalls and activities from various military organisations.

Carlisle Pageant Puppet Parade and Family Funday

Date: Saturday 16 August

Venue: City Centre

Time: 10am and 4pm

A community puppet parade will be the exciting centre-piece of the day. Giant puppets depicting key historic characters will parade from the Civic Centre.

Carlisle Pageant Markets

Date: Sunday 17 - Monday 25 August

Venue: City Centre

From: 10.30am each day

More than a week’s worth of market stalls, leading off with the ‘Best of Carlisle’ traders, followed by traders from around the world


Fireshow Fun Day

Date: Saturday 1 November

Venue: City Centre

From: 2pm - 6pm

Street performers/facepainting etc in the city centre from 2pm – 6pm.

A free fun family day in the city centre, with street performers.  An ideal start to the Fireshow.



Date: Saturday 1 November

Time: Bonfire is lit at 7pm. Pre-show entertainment starts at 6.30pm

Venue: Bitts Park

Admission: FREE (but donations greatly received for The Mayor’s Charity Fund and Rotary Club of Carlisle South).

Volunteers will be holding charity buckets on the entrance to the event and organisers are asking adult spectators to consider giving £1 each. The Carlisle Fireshow is in the top ten bonfire and firework displays in the country and attracts around 35,000 people. The firework display is spectacular and the whole show is set to music and lasts for approximately an hour. It’s a great night to enjoy a safe fireshow with all the family.

Remembrance Sunday

Date: Sunday 9 November

Time: 10am onwards, with a two minute silence at 11am

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Admission: FREE Remembrance Sunday is a chance for residents of Carlisle to remember members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. It is an emotional day, but one that makes us a proud city.

Carlisle Christmas Light Switch On

Date: Sunday 16 November

Time: 2pm - 5.30pm

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Admission: FREE

Carlisle Christmas Light Switch On is part of Carlisle's countdown to Christmas. A packed programme will be planned for the build-up to the event. The programme is packed full of free family entertainment, with must-see acts and local entertainers too at the event. There will be frolics, fun and laughs all afternoon, another fabulous FREE family day for all
