Carlisle Spring Show 2010

The Carlisle Spring Show is an established two day horticultural event set in Victoria Gardens in Bitts Park. With over fourty trade and exhibition stands selling plants, flowers, shrubs, garden accessories and equipment and with a children’s activity marquee, play area and entertainment, the event is suitable for all ages.

There are also Floral Art Competition and 'Made In Cumbria' food and crafts marquees.

Upperby Gala 2010

Date: Monday 31st May 2010
Venue: Hammond’s Pond, Upperby Park, Carlisle
Times: 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm
Admission: Free

The Upperby Gala is now in it’s 23rd year and is a very popular family event set in parkland to the east of the City. Professional entertainers provide the fun in a main arena, with The Welsh Axemen, The Crazy Tramps, Lairds of Dixieland Jazz Band, Dancing Tractors, Heroes Cheerleaders, Cheeky Charlie, RSPCA Fun Dog Show, Mini Soccer Tournament, Wrestling, Archery, Fairground rides, Charity stalls, Model Railway, Model Boats, Children’s Activity Marquee plus much more. Money is raised for local charities on a selection of stalls. Admission is free.

Love Parks Week

Dates: Saturday 24 July - Sunday 1 August 2010
Venues: Various parks & green spaces across Carlisle City

'Love Parks Week' is a national campaign co-ordinated by the charity GreenSpace to highlight and celebrate the value of parks & green spaces to communities. In 2010 Carlisle City Council has organised an exciting programme of 30 events at different parks & green spaces across the city including guided walks, family activities and an outdoor film screening in Bitts Park.

National Playday

Wednesday 4 August is Playday - the annual celebration of children's right to play.

On Playday and throughout the summer, thousands of children, young people and communities will get out to play at hundreds of locally organised events across the UK. As well as a celebration of children's right to play, Playday is also a campaign that raises awareness about some serious issues affecting children's play.

The Playday 2010 campaign is Our place. Our place puts children at the heart of our communities, and asks everyone, young and old, to help create better places for all of us to live and play.

The Continental Market

Date: 26th Aug – 30th Aug 2010
Venue: Carlisle city centre
Admission: free

Organised by Carlisle City Council in partnership with Market Place Europe.

Traders attending this year’s market and offering a wide range of food wine beer, and crafts will be from: Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland, China, and Bangladesh.


Fireshow 2010

FireshowTheme for 2010 is The Circus

Date: Saturday 6th November 2010
Venue: Bitts Park, Carlisle
Times: Entertainment starts at 6.30pm, Bonfire lit at 7pm
Admission: Free

The Carlisle Fireshow is in the top ten bonfire and firework displays in the country and attracts around 35,000 people. The bonfire is themed and built to a specific construction which has a pyrotechnic and firework display set onto moving parts. The firework display which follows is spectacular and the whole show is set to music. A fairground and catering units are also on site and add to the atmosphere.

Admission is free although donations are collected for local charities.

Parking / Access information & Safety Advice

All City Council car parks are free after 6pm, some other car parks may charge. The following temporary traffic arrangements will apply throughout the day:

  • No vehicle access to Bitts Park. The Sheepmount will also be closed.
  • No vehicle access to Dacre Road (adjacent to Carlisle Castle & Bitts Park).
  • Bitts Park (Dacre Road) Car Park will be closed.
  • No vehicle access to Bitts Park from Willowholme or The Sheepmount.

Access

Limited disabled parking although some spaces will be reserved in Devonshire Walk Car Park on first come, first served basis. A special viewing area for wheelchair users will be set aside on Sheepmount Road.

Access will be maintained via Irish Gate Bridge. However for safety reasons stewards will ensure the bridge deck is not used as a viewing area due to the expected congestion of spectators.

Safety

Visitors are asked to note that by the very nature of the event, smoke, noise, embers and mud underfoot, are inevitable. All are requested to be mindful of the risks and to come prepared for such eventualities: warm clothing and suitable footwear.

For safety reasons, no fireworks of any kind (including sparklers) are allowed into this event. Pets are also prohibited from the park: they should be kept safely at home to avoid any possible distress. The sale of fluorescent, illuminous items should only be purchased from authorised users inside the park.
