In addition to Made in Cumbria Farmers’ Markets every first Friday in the month, the following events are planned for Carlisle city centre and venues close by in 2014:

Easter International Market

Date: Wednesday 16 - Monday 21 April

The return of this popular market with its gifts, flavours and aromas from all over Continental Europe and beyond.

Pirelli Carlisle Richard Burns Foundation Rally

Date: Saturday 3 - Sunday 4 May

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Carlisle Music City

A week filled with music will make Carlisle’s city centre a vibrant and attractive place to visit.

Upperby Gala

Date: Monday 26 May 

Venue: Hammond's Pond, Upperby Park, Carlisle

Time: 1pm - 4pm

Admission: Free

The Upperby Gala is a popular family event set in parkland to the east of the city. Professional entertainers provide the fun in a main arena. Money was raised for local charities on a selection of stalls.

Armed Forces Day

Date: Saturday 28 June

Time: From 10am

Venue: City Centre

Armed Forces Day is a national celebration of the UK's Armed Forces - past, present and future. A free city centre event  included stalls and activities from various military organisations.

George's Marvellous Medicine - Bitts Park open-air theatre

Date: Thursday 17 July

Time: 6pm

Venue: Bitts Park

Illyria Theatre Company returned to Bitts Park Carlisle with another Roald Dahl classic full of (literally) larger-than-life characters, plenty to join in with, and just a twist of malicious fun!

Patriot Games - Festival of Sport

Date: Sunday 20 July

Venue: The Sheepmount Stadium

Time: 11am - 4pm

To coincide with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Carlisle staged a Festival of Sport.

The Festival of Sport was part of the inaugural Patriot Games, organised by CN Events, Carlisle City Council, Carlisle Leisure Limited, Cumbrian Sport and Physical Activity Alliance Foundation (SPAA) and Active Cumbria.

Carlisle Pageant Puppet Parade and Family Funday

Date: Saturday 16 August

Venue: City Centre

Time: 10am and 4pm

The free community event will celebrate the city’s history and heritage and will link in with the ancient proclamation of the Great Fair, to be held a week later on Saturday 23 August.

The programme will include lots of family friendly fun, including face painting and street entertainers. A community parade including giant puppets depicting key historic characters from the Tudor period, including Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots, will parade from the Civic Centre at 2pm making its way to the city centre and the Old Town Hall via Scotch Street.

Tempest at the Tarn - open air theatre

Date: Saturday 16 August

Venue: Talkin Tarn

Time: 6pm for a 7pm start

The Pantaloons, a touring theatre company, will perform ‘The Tempest’ within the grounds of the country park. The performance is one hour and 40 minutes, plus a 20 minute interval. Tickets cost £12.50 for adults, £10 concessions and £8 children. A family ticket is available for £35. Tickets are available from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre. Please bring along your own seating or a picnic blanket, and wear appropriate clothing too.

Carlisle Pageant Markets

Date: Sunday 17 - Monday 25 August

Venue: City Centre

From: 10.30am each day

The Pageant programme will also include Best of Carlisle’ Market stalls between Sunday 17 August and Wednesday 20 August, followed by an international market between Thursday 21 and Monday 25 August.

Local businesses are being asked to support the extended Pageant week programme by offering up incentives for residents and visitors alike, from Saturday 16 August to Monday, 25 August which showcase local tourism attractions and retail.

Borderline - a Carlisle Festival of Reading and Writing 

Date: Friday 5 - Sunday 7 September

Venue: Various venues

Organised by Bookends, Cumbria Library Service and Tullie House Museum Trust, in association with Cumbria Life.

There will be the chance to hear and enjoy a wide range of best-selling, well-known names talking about their books. Authors confirmed so far include: Rory Stewart MP; Hunter Davies; Eric Robson; Alan Johnson MP; Matt Hilton and Sheila Quigley.

If you love to write, there will be a Writers’ Quarter on Saturday 6 September, where you can join workshops on everything from poetry and therapeutic writing, to writing for children. There will also be a creative crime writing masterclass with William Ryan.

Workshops on self- publishing and storytelling, all led by experts in their field, will conclude with a celebration of the written work produced, at a special Litcaff night.

Fireshow Fun Day

Date: Saturday 1 November

Venue: City Centre

From: 2pm - 6pm

Street performers/facepainting etc in the city centre from 2pm – 6pm.

A free fun family day in the city centre, with street performers.  An ideal start to the Fireshow.

Fireshow

Date: Saturday 1 November

Time: Bonfire is lit at 7pm. Pre-show entertainment starts at 6.30pm

Venue: Bitts Park

Admission: FREE (but donations greatly received for The Mayor’s Charity Fund and Rotary Club of Carlisle South).

Volunteers will be holding charity buckets on the entrance to the event and organisers are asking adult spectators to consider giving £1 each. The Carlisle Fireshow is in the top ten bonfire and firework displays in the country and attracts around 35,000 people. The firework display is spectacular and the whole show is set to music and lasts for approximately an hour. It’s a great night to enjoy a safe fireshow with all the family.

Remembrance Sunday

Date: Sunday 9 November

Time: 10am onwards, with a two minute silence at 11am

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Admission: FREE Remembrance Sunday is a chance for residents of Carlisle to remember members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. It is an emotional day, but one that makes us a proud city.

Carlisle Christmas Light Switch On

Date: Sunday 16 November

Time: 1pm - 5.30pm

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Admission: FREE

Carlisle Christmas Light Switch On is part of Carlisle's countdown to Christmas. A packed programme will be planned for the build-up to the event. The programme is packed full of free family entertainment, with must-see acts and local entertainers too at the event. Christmas International Market

Date: Wednesday 3 - Sunday 7 December

Venue: Carlisle City Centre

Festive gifts, flavours and aromas from all over Continental Europe and beyond. You will be spoilt for choice with such a wide collection of stalls and products from Thailand, India, South Africa, France, Germany, Spain and so many more!
