Budget Consultation

Over the next four years, we have to save a further £2.3million from our budget. We want your views on how we should do this.

Why do we have to reduce our budget?

The proposed savings contained in the budget proposals are necessary to ensure that we continue to meet the challenges of a 26% reduction in the money received from central government over the five years (starting in 2011/12).

We have successfully identified £3million in transformational savings and now have a solid financial base in order to set our 2012/13 budget. In the circumstances we can adopt a more measured approach in spreading the further savings required of £2.337million over the next four years whilst maintaining a safe and healthy financial future for the Council.

As part of next year's budget, we are proposing a Council tax freeze for the City Council for 2012/13.

How are we going to save money?

We are committed to protecting front-line services, such as waste and recycling collections and street cleaning, and especially to our most vulnerable residents, but we have to take some tough decisions about our services and future spending.

We are determined to protect important services by doing things differently, such as:

  • working in partnership with other councils or organisations;
  • buying in services (where it makes good financial sense);
  • looking at transferring services to community groups, if appropriate;
  • focusing on raising more income from our own assets; and
  • making our services even more efficient.

We welcome your views and suggestions as to how we can meet these financial challenges.

How can I have my say?

Let us know what you think of the proposals set out in the budget. This is set out in two documents:

  • A summary of the Executive’s Budget proposals
  • The complete version the Executive’s Budget proposals.

You can contact us in the following ways, but consultation for 2012/13 will close at 9am on Monday 16 January 2012.
