Collection powers transfer to City Council
The duty to collect stray dogs in Carlisle has transferred from
Cumbria Constabulary to the City Council.
Stray dogs could previously be reported direct to the Police,
but from this Sunday onwards residents should contact Carlisle City
Council's Dog Warden Service, run by the Animals' Refuge at
Wetheral Shields, on 01228 560082 during normal office hours
(Monday and Friday, 9am - 5pm).
Outside office hours, at weekends and on Bank Holidays, Carlisle
City Council has a contractor who will pick up dogs that have been
contained, they can be contacted on 07802 984725.
Any dogs taken to the Refuge can be re-claimed between 9.30am
and 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays by arrangement
only.
Heather McLean, Director The Animals' Refuge said:
“If you are a dog owner, you have a duty under
the Control of Dogs Order 1992 to ensure that your dog with your
name and address inscribed on it. If your dog is wearing a collar
with identification and the dog strays there is more chance of him
being returned to you safely.
“Even the best-trained dogs can become strays -
it only takes a moment for a dog to be distracted or frightened and
run off. Dog theft is also becoming a more common problem. To keep
your dog safe, do not put his name on the identification tag, as
this makes it easier for a thief to lure him away. You may also
consider having your pet microchipped. Speak to your Vet or phone
the Animals' Refuge to arrange an appointment. Please note that a
microchip is NOT a substitute for a collar and tag, but does help
reunite people with their pets.”
