Local student’s photography showcased in Civic Centre
A local student’s view of Carlisle is being showcased at
Carlisle City Council’s Civic Centre.
A series of 20 photographs by year one University of Cumbria MA
photography student, George Bitsanis, is currently on display
within the entrance area of the Civic Centre building.
The striking images depict different parts of Carlisle and
include photographs of landmark buildings alongside photographs of
local residents and everyday activities.
Commissioned by the City Council in partnership with the
University of Cumbria, the display recognises the Council’s
promotion of Carlisle as a Learning City and provides an inviting
entrance area for visitors and employees alike.
Maggie Mooney, Carlisle City Council’s Town Clerk and Chief
Executive said:
"We have a strong partnership with the University
of Cumbria and recognise the important contribution students make
to the city. George’s photographs provide a fascinating insight
into how a visiting student sees Carlisle, its people and its
landmarks. They are a brilliant addition to our Civic Centre
building and will no doubt be of interest to all our visitors,
staff and city councillors."
Head of Culture and Community Services Mark Beveridge, Tullie
House’s Arts & Museums Manager, Hilary Wade and the University
of Cumbria’s Steve Minto have overseen the commission work. Hilary
added:
"George is clearly a very talented photographer,
whose images show familiar Carlisle views from a very different
standpoint. I am sure visitors to the Civic Centre will enjoy
viewing the photographs and identifying the landmarks."
University of Cumbria’s Enterprise Operations Officer (Research
and Creative Enterprise Services), Steve Minto said:
"It’s great that one of our students has
had the opportunity to have his work showcased in this way. It’s
excellent for our students to interact with outside
organisations."
