Community clean-up

Partnership scheme aims to kick start new sports facilities

(Date of issue: Wednesday, 8 April 2009)

Local families are being urged to give a helping hand next week as part of community clean-up scheme.

Organised by a partnership of Carlisle City Council’s Sport and Recreation department, Carlisle Housing Association, Cumbria County Council and the recently formed Trinity Area Community Trust, the four-day event aims to not only to clean up a local park but also put in place new sporting equipment for local youngsters.

Starting next Tuesday (14 April), the community days will continue until Friday (17 April), between 10am and 6pm each day.

Dowbeck Park will be the centre of the ‘Groundforce’ style makeover, with the main aims being to clear up litter, paint and put in a new Mini-BMX track, football facilities and a Youth Shelter.

An information and advice will also be held on Thursday, 16 April at the Wigton Road Methodist Church, between 1pm and 4pm, where representatives from various agencies, including the Fire Service, Cumbria Police, NHS and Healthy Living Initiative will be on hand to give their support.

The community project will culminate on Friday, 17 April with an official opening ceremony for the new BMX track and sports site by one of the youngsters who has provided the best support throughout the four days.
