Open Mic Night for Carlisle teenagers
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 6 April 2011)
An ‘Open Mic Night’ will be held this Friday (8 April) for local
youngsters.
Carlisle Joint Schools Council have organised the event, which
is open to all young people from Carlisle and the surrounding rural
areas and is a chance to show off their musical talents.
It will be held at the Calva Bar at the University of Cumbria on
Fusehill Street, between 6pm and 9pm.
The Carlisle Joint Schools Council ‘Campaign Group’ are aged
between 14-16. The group have previously held reduced priced events
at AMF bowling and are continuing their campaign to encourage
reduced priced entertainment for young people in Carlisle by
holding the music event. They want local business and organisations
to recognise that there is a lack of live entertainment for this
age group.
A group of eight teenagers from secondary schools across the
city have been planning and organising the event for the past two
months. There is also a Facebook page for others to get involved,
contribute and have their say if they are unable to attend the
weekly meetings, held each Thursday afternoon between 4pm and 5pm
at the Civic Centre.
Sarah Moss-Luffrum, Youth Participation Officer for Carlisle
City Council, said: “Carlisle City Council have been supporting the
group to set up the ‘Youth Open Mic Night’ at the University of
Cumbria’s Calva Bar at the Fusehill Street Campus. The group are
still continuing to campaign for reduced teen prices but are now
focusing on having more live music events for young people between
11 - 19. This event is designed to show off local musical talent by
young people in the hope that more regular gigs will be hosted in
Carlisle by other businesses and organisations in the future.”
The event is for young people aged 11 – 19. It is ticketed but
free although limited numbers are now available due to high demand.
There is a consent form on the back of the ticket that must be
completed by a parent/guardian for anyone under the age of 18 who
wants to attend. The first drink will be free including a buffet.
The timing of the event is 6pm – 9pm with a line up of live music
performed by young people.
