Big Tidy Up
Castle Ward - Caldewgate Big Tidy Up
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 17 August 2011)
Work to clear up a local area in Carlisle will soon be underway.
As part of a Big Tidy Up campaign, the Caldewgate area will be
getting a comprehensive clean-up.
Carlisle City Council and Riverside, Carlisle’s largest social
landlord, have organised the work which will start next Monday (22
August). In some areas, the City Council’s neighbourhood team will
be asking residents to move their vehicles, at certain times, so
allow mechanical sweeping to be done.
Carlisle City Council will be doing the following in the
Caldewgate area during the Big Tidy Up week: additional road
sweeping; removing fly tipping; litter picking; removing fly
posters; removing graffiti; removing weeds; painting street
furniture and other general maintenance work.
Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment and Housing,
said:
“Litter, fly tipping and graffiti are major issues for local
residents and we want to work alongside communities to try and
stamp them out as much as we can. The Big Tidy Up week will provide
us with the opportunity to work with partners and residents to
tackle the problems and make a big difference to the local
environment.”
Gillian Brough, Tenancy and Estate Manager, Riverside Carlisle,
said:
“Big Clean Up days make a real difference to local
neighbourhoods, residents really appreciate the positive impact it
has on their area. Riverside is proud that partnership working with
the city council is helping to improve areas across the city. By
working together we can achieve more for our communities.”
The clear up has the support of ward councillors in Castle ward.
Cllr Olwyn Luckley, speaking on behalf of the Liberal Democrat
Castle Ward Councillors, said:
“Cllr Tootle and I are very familiar with the problems faced by
residents regarding fly tipping and litter dropping. As
councillors, we act as a link between the Street Maintenance Team,
who always respond to the Community who need their support in
dealing with these problems.”
Cllr Willie Whalen, Labour Castle Ward Councillor, said:
“I would like to thank the team who have been clearing up the
ward recently. They are making a good job of it. I’m pleased that
there has been a start made on Caldewgate, it’s not before time.
Caldewgate means a lot to me, as I was born and bred there.”
