Have a green Christmas
City centre festive recycling roadshow
(Date of issue: Tuesday, 9 December 2008)
Carlisle City Council is staging a special festive
recycling roadshow this Friday (12 December) to encourage local
residents to have a ‘green’ Christmas.
The event will be held in the city centre pedestrianised
shopping area between 11am and 2pm.
A professional chef will be on hand to show how to make best use
of festive food leftovers. James Hill, from the Bijou restaurant
will be cooking up some treats at 11.30am and 1pm, as part of the
national ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign organised by WRAP (Waste
Resources Action Programme). James will be using a mobile kitchen
unit provided by Made in Cumbria.
A competition will
also be running at the event, with a top prize of £100 Sharrow Bay
restaurant vouchers. Visitors to the event will asked to give their
own Love Food Hate Waste tip and will then be entered into the
competition. They will also get an Eat Well, Waste Less recipe book
to take away with them.
Advice on how to recycle in Carlisle over the festive period
will also be available:
How to have a green Christmas:
- If you have a Greenbox, you can recycle the following items
from your kerbside or at a local recycling point: wrapping paper;
Christmas cards; clean and empty glass bottles & jars and
drinks & food cans. Please do not put anything in plastic
carrier bags.
- You can recycle your real Christmas trees using your Garden
Waste bin (place it beside the bin, on the day of your collection,
if it is too big to go inside). In the New Year, to help speed up
your garden waste collections, please do not place your garden
waste bin out for collection unless it is at least half full.
- If you have Greenbags you can recycle the following items from
the kerbside or from recycling points: cardboard food and packaging
boxes (please place beside your cardboard bag if it will not fit
in); hard plastic packaging; plastic bottles, plastic biscuit trays
& other plastic trays/food tubs. Please put plastics in one bag
and cardboard in the other.
