Join up for Carlisle family event

More than 80 entries have already been received for next month’s Sainsbury’s Sports Relief Mile, to be held at The Sheepmount, on Sunday, 16 March at 12noon.

Carlisle City Council and the Schools Sports Partnership are organising the local family event and are encouraging local residents to rise to the sporting challenge. The Carlisle event is one of more than 200 Sports Relief Mile events across the UK.

You can complete the mile by walking, running, skipping, bouncing a ball or in whatever sporty fashion you wish. Entry costs are £5 for adults (16 and over), £2 for children (under 16) and a family discount of £12 for two adults and two children.

The last time the national fund-raising day was held, in 2006, a staggering 400,000 men, women and children did a Mile for Sport Relief – including Prince William who ran at Sandhurst, giving his royal seal of approval. The 2006 Carlisle event included more than 120 Carlisle schoolchildren from 30 primary and junior schools.

Carlisle Cllr Ray Knapton, Portfolio holder for Community Engagement said:

"We’re delighted that Carlisle has been selected to host this exciting event. It was a huge success in 2006 and we’re looking forward to seeing hundreds of residents taking part, getting sponsored and raising money for Sport Relief."

Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better. By doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can do good and feel good. Comic Relief spends the money raised to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries. The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile sits at the heart of the Sport Relief Weekend and is the ultimate way to get involved.
