All pubs and clubs can now apply
(Date of issue: Friday, 4 January 2011)
Time is running out for pubs, clubs and bars in Carlisle and
Eden to take part in this year’s Best Bar None national
accreditation scheme.
Next Monday (7 February) is the deadline set for entries to take
part in the scheme.
Focussing on safety and customer care, it was introduced to our
area in 2008 by the Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction
Partnership (CDRP), working with the Late Night Entertainment
Industry.
It has seen year on year increases in premises signing up to be
involved. In 2010, 29 premises applied to take part in the Best Bar
None Scheme in Carlisle, including five from Brampton (which could
take part for the first time in the scheme) and 12 premises applied
in Eden District.
In 2011, all pubs, clubs and bars in Carlisle and Eden can take
part, including those from other rural areas within these
districts.
The first applicant for this year’s scheme was Walkabout, the
2010 Carlisle overall winner.
The awards seek to establish a standard of excellence within the
pubs, clubs and bars in both Penrith and Carlisle: The aims of the
scheme are:
- To reduce the incidents of crime and disorder associated with
the consumption of alcohol;
- To promote Carlisle and Penrith as a safe and professional
environment in which to live, work, visit and socialise;
- To identify and reward responsible licensed premises; and
- To share good practice with other in order to raise
standards.
Assessments will take place during February and March, with the
top three premises in each category appearing before independent
judges on Friday, 6 May.
Licensed premises who are accredited as part of the Best Bar
None Scheme will receive a plaque and certificate for public
display and may become eligible for significant reductions in
business insurance premiums through a scheme run by the BEDA.
An annual awards ceremony is also held, where the Best Bar None
pub, club or bar will be announced, as well as an overall winner.
This year’s event will be held at the Crown & Mitre, Carlisle
on Tuesday, 24 May.
