Talkin Tarn
Proposals for new woodland planting scheme
(Date of issue: Tuesday, 8 February 2011)
Proposals are in place to plant more than 11,000 trees at Talkin
Tarn Country Park.
Visitors to the park and the Friends of Talkin Tarn are being
asked their views on the scheme. Depending on feedback to the
consultation, an application will then be submitted to the Woodland
Grant Scheme.
The plans include:
- Extending and linking in with existing woodland areas within
Talkin Tarn;
- Ensuring that the planting densities and locations take into
account preservation of the view across the Tarn to the fells and
complement the existing landscape of the area; and
- Providing more opportunity for wildlife to flourish by linking
the proposed planting scheme with Gelt Woods.
Land, currently used as grazing land, is proposed as the site
for the new woodland. It would cover 10.8 hectares and the planting
will be to a density of 1,100 trees/hectare in line with Forestry
Commission requirements. Access for the public will be encouraged
through the woodland areas via a pathway.
If the decision is taken to submit an application to the
Woodland Grant Scheme, and is approved, their £30,000 funding will
be used alongside a £10,000 AONB North Pennines grant. If
successful, the aim is to have the planting completed by late March
this year.
A map showing where the planting is proposed, alongside the
density of planting and proposed species, has been sent to members
of the Friends of Talkin Tarn. They are also available by visiting
