Botchergate consultation
Public exhibition goes on display
(Date of issue: Friday, 3 February 2012)
A public exhibition setting out a draft vision to improve and
revive Botchergate is now on display.
A draft Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan was
approved by the City Council in November 2011 and is now out to
public consultation. A copy can either be viewed on the City
Council website – www.carlisle.gov.uk - or as a paper copy from the
Civic Centre or Carlisle Library.
An exhibition is now on show in:
- Carlisle Library until Sunday, 5 February (Carlisle City
Council staff will be available between 10am and 11am, Monday to
Friday);
- Civic Centre between Monday, 6 February and Monday, 5 March
(Carlisle City Council staff will be available to answer any
questions by appointment, by calling 01228 817077); and
- The foyer of VUE Cinema, Carlisle between 6 February and 5
March.
Cllr Marilyn Bowman, Portfolio holder for Economic Development,
said:
“Although recent years have seen significant investment in the
northern end of Botchergate, and some very welcome recent
initiatives by private developers such as the refurbishment of the
Stanley Hall, the area still faces many economic and environmental
problems.
“The draft plan recommends how best to safeguard and enhance the
area. It supports the council’s goal to strengthen the economy of
Botchergate and encourages owners to invest in their historic
buildings.”
The area was designated as a conservation area in 1994. The
draft plan suggests that the area is extended and looks at detail
at the quality and character currently in place.
An adopted Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for
Botchergate would enable the identification of those elements of
significance within the area, and provide a sound basis for
development management decisions and for developing initiatives to
improve the area. This information will also be helpful to those
considering investing in the area and can be used to guide the
character of new development.
The City Council is inviting comments by Monday, 5 March 2012.
