Carlisle Cenotaph
Improvement works due to start
(Date of issue: Friday, 17 February 2012)
Improvement works will get underway this week on the
railings surrounding Rickerby Park’s Carlisle Cenotaph.
The Cumberland and Westmorland War Memorial has been a key
landmark since 1922 and was funded by the Carlisle Citizens’
League.
The Grade II listed monument is now maintained by Carlisle City
Council. Repairs costing around £14,500 are due to start on
Monday (20 February) and will last around four weeks (weather
dependent). The project has been partially funded by the War
Memorials Trust, who awarded a grant of £3,500.
Work on the railings will include repairing broken sections,
replacing missing finials, rubbing down and repainting as well as
the fabrication of a new entrance gate and lock.
Carlisle City Council has contracted Roland Hill Ltd, a
Cumbrian-based building firm, to undertake the work.
Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment and Housing,
said:
“The Rickerby Park Cenotaph has been a prominent landmark in
Carlisle for ninety-years and it’s important that we preserve it
for future years. The substantial repair works will improve the
look of the monument and will ensure that it’s a fitting tribute to
those who served their country and made the ultimate
sacrifice.”
Landscaping improvements are also planned to coincide with the
centenary anniversary of the start of World War I in 2014.
