It’s all ‘grin’ up North
Carlisle’s the Happiest Place in the UK
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 8 February 2012)
Its official – Carlisle is the happiest place to live in the
UK.
According to a survey by property company, Rightmove, Carlisle
ranks as the top place to live.
The ‘Happy at Home’ survey questioned 25,000 people about their
level of contentment on everything from size, value and decor of
their homes to safety, how friendly neighbours are and qualities of
local amenities being asked. The survey was carried out between 3 -
17 October last year.
Carlisle ranked top in three of the categories: well-being –
feeling relaxed at home; safety – feeling safe in the local
community and neighbourliness – friendly neighbours.
Carlisle City Council has welcomed the news and the national
coverage it’s received.
Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Mike Mitchelson, said:
“We’ve always known Carlisle’s a great place, live, work and
visit. This property survey shows that Carlisle is a friendly city,
something which I’d whole heartedly agree with. It’s great that the
city is getting this kind of national recognition and that our
residents are being billed as the happiest in UK. I hope that it
encourages more visitors to the city. Together with our partners we
are focused on promoting Carlisle to visitors and also new
businesses, we can offer a great quality of life and this has been
reflected in the study. There are always lots on offer for
residents and visitors and this is something we should
celebrate.”
The City Council continues to promote Carlisle to potential
visitors and business. Tourism marketing has resulted in coverage
in the New York Times; the Discover Britain magazine; and the
‘Britain’ magazine. Along with a double page ‘All in a Day’ feature
in the Group Leisure magazine.
