Tackling untaxed vehicles
Carlisle City Council has seized nearly 80 cars over the past
nine months in a crackdown on abandoned and untaxed vehicles.
Over the past nine months, 20 untaxed vehicles and 59 abandoned
vehicles have been removed. A total of 21 vehicles were also
returned to the owners after charges totalling more than £2,500
were paid, 58 vehicles have been disposed of.
Carlisle City Council is reminding local road tax dodgers to
ensure that their vehicle is taxed or risk having their vehicle
impounded and disposed of if charges are not paid.
The Council joined forces with the Driver & Vehicle
Licensing Agency (DVLA) to combat the problem of untaxed vehicles
in 2006 and has been helping to catch offenders ever since.
Motorists throughout the Carlisle district who do not license
their vehicles have been targeted in this latest campaign to
recover millions of pounds lost each year in Vehicle Excise Duty
(VED) evasion and also to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles
on city streets.
Carlisle City Council and the DVLA is encouraging all motorists
to check that their vehicles are properly licensed and, if not, to
re-license them immediately. People that don’t follow the rules and
continue to park or drive untaxed vehicles on the highway will have
their vehicle impounded. These vehicles will subsequently be
crushed if the relevant fines and costs are not paid.
Carlisle City Council offers a free vehicle disposal service for
local residents. All the schemes aim to make Carlisle cleaner,
greener & safer.
