Fun times ahead

Carlisle summer schemes

From next Monday (23 July), children and young people of all ages will be able to sample a wide-range of fun Summer holiday activities, courtesy of Carlisle City Council. This year's activities start next week and include:

  • Rural playschemes in 21 locations over a five-week period, aimed at 5 to 11 year olds. Free of charge. The first playschemes start today (20 July);
  • Multi-Use Games Area activities. Activities will be staged in Melbourne Park, Botcherby; Dale End Road, Harraby; Morton Secondary Outdoor Courts; Hammond's Pond, Upperby; Brampton's George V playing fields; Yewdale Community Centre playing fields and Heysham Park, Raffles. Activities will take place between Monday, 23 July to Wednesday, 15 August and are open to young people aged between 8 and 17 years old. Telephone 01228 817371 for further information;
  • Star:Track a nation-wide scheme run in partnership with UK Athletics which provides top level coaching to 8 to 12 year olds. This will run between Monday, 23 to Wednesday, 25 July at The Sheepmount;
  • Go 4 It an exciting sports programme which offers a wide-range of action-packed activities. Activities include breakdancing, grass track cycling, rock climbing, rowing, trampolining and waterpolo. Most events are aimed at 10 to 14 year olds, however some events have, for the first time, been extended to include young people aged up to 17 years old.   • Rural Go 4 It programme aimed at 12 to 17 year olds, the range of activities include boxing, breakdancing, canoeing, cricket and rowing. Places are limited and must be pre-booked. Telephone 01228 817370 to book a place;
  • Basketball camp aimed at children aged between 10 and 17 years old, the event will be staged between Monday, 6 and Wednesday, 8 August at St Martin's College between 10am and 1pm each day. For further information telephone 01228 817581.

A National Playday will be also celebrated by the City Council on Wednesday, 1 August, when a series of events will be arranged for children 0 to 11 years of age in the city centre pedestrianised shopping area. This year's theme is 'Our Streets Too!'. A 'Skate Jam' will be also be staged on the same day for young people of all ages at Devonshire Walk skate park.
