Talkin Tarn
Countdown to annual Regatta
Talkin Tarn will play host to its annual amateur rowing club
regatta this Saturday (7 July).
Organised by the Tarn's Amateur Rowing Club, the long-standing
event attracts hundreds of visitors each year and is free to
watch.
Nearly 300 entries from competitors have been received. Racing
will take place over a 700-metre course across the breadth of the
water, starting at 9am. The last will be staged at around
5pm.
Carlisle City Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for
Environment and Infrastructure said:
"The Tarn is an ideal location for watersports.
The regatta and the rowing club have been integral parts of the
tarn for many generations and we encourage local residents to come
along to this year's event. It's set to be enjoyable day out for
all the family to enjoy."
Rowing races have been held on the tarn since the 1850's. The
Rowing Club was formed in 1859 by local towns-folk, several
descendants of whom still live in the area. It is the oldest rowing
club in the North of England with the exception of Tyne RC and is
the 14th oldest non-university club in the country.
In recent years the Club has been very strong in Junior and
Veteran Class and have achieved numerous successes with more than
200 wins at Open Regattas, Medals at the World Masters
Championships plus two Silver and one Bronze Medal at The British
National Rowing Championships.
Talkin Tarn Annual Regatta has grown considerably in recent
years from a total entry of 20 in 1946 and 97 in 1988 to what it is
today very successful and the largest one day regatta outside
London with total entries now in excess of 300.
The Club members' ages range from 10 to 74 and all new members
of any age welcomed. Club nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays between
6.30pm to 8.30pm and Sundays, 9am and 11am.
