Sound of Summer
Workshops for local schoolchildren
Hundreds of local Carlisle school children will be sampling
some international skills next week, on the run up this year's
Festival of Nations event, scheduled for this Saturday (7 July) in
Carlisle's city centre.
All this week pupils from 30 primary schools will be taking
part in a diverse range of activities. This will include Asian and
Chinese arts & crafts, traditional Morris dancing, African
drumming, Indonesian music and creative workshops themed around the
Golden Rule which promotes 'treating others as you want to be
treated'. The Music Zone's double-decker bus will also be touring
Carlisle schools throughout the week.
Trinity School and Langholm School have also be taking part in
a unique project commemorating the 300th anniversary of the English
and Scottish union. Students have been encouraged to create music
and songs that express their thoughts on the state of the union,
culminating in a performance by both schools at Trinity School
tomorrow (Thursday, 5 July) at 12noon.
The Carlisle City Council one-day Festival of Nations will be
held on Saturday, 7 July and will include musicians and dancers
celebrating cultures from around the world performing in the city
centre shopping area. The global street party is free and will be
held between 10am and 5pm.
Thousands of visitors sample the free Carlisle City Council
event each year and this year's performers includes Filipino and
Thai dancers, Chinese acrobats, Ukranian Cossack dancers, African
Zulu drummers and dancers, Irish dancers, Caribbean Steel band,
Bollywood dancers and a group of dancers visiting the City for the
first time from Bangladesh.
Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Mike Mitchelson
said:
"The Festival of Nations is one of the City
Council's most colourful and diverse events. This year, as well as
the performances in the city centre, there will also be a series of
workshop sessions in local schools. Children will be able to
participate in a variety of activities and learn more about other
cultures."
Festival of Nations workshops will also be held at Tullie
House Museum for residents, of all ages, to sample on Saturday, 7
July between 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm 3.30pm. The two free
creative courses will celebrate the event's guiding principle 'The
Golden Rule' which is common to all major religions. Twenty-five
places are available at each session and need to be booked in
advance by calling 01228 534664 or by calling into
Tullie House's main reception.
