Visitors to a local park in Carlisle have
now got more opportunities to enjoy a snack and a cuppa, after
opening times have been extended.
Hammond’s Pond café, in the south of the city, is open between
12noon and 5pm, seven days a week. The cafe had previously only
opened on weekends and during school holidays.
There is now more to choose from and the
menu now includes a range of panini’s, as well as bacon rolls,
sausage rolls, sandwiches and pasties. Those with a sweet tooth are
also catered for, with cakes and tray bakes also on offer. Fresh
coffee, sweets, cold drinks and English Lakes ice-cream are also on
the menu.
The café is managed by Carlisle City
Council. The opening hours have been extended to provide a more
regular service to customers and every effort has been made to
provide a wider range of products.
Hammond’s Pond’s facilities include:
children play areas; boating lake; aviaries and dovecote;
full-sized and junior football pitches; Multi-Use Games Area;
Miniature Railway; public toilets and two car parks with free
parking. The café has disabled access, toilets for the disabled and
baby changing facilities.

Hammond's Pond is in the south of Carlisle. There is
vehicular access and free parking from the park entrance off
Blackwell Road and from the park entrance off Buchannan
Road. Pedestrian access is from Blackwell Road, Buchannan Road,
Henderson Road and Scalegate Road.
The Hammond’s Pond café was refurbished in 2008.
A record number of Carlisle parks and green spaces achieved top
national awards this July and are some of the best green spaces in
England and Wales. The ‘Magnificent Seven’ are: Bitts Park,
Carlisle Cemetery grounds, Hammond’s Pond, Kingmoor Nature Reserve,
Talkin Tarn Country Park, Tullie House Gardens and Stanwix
Churchyard. The winners of the 2010/11 Green Flag Award, the
national standard for parks and green spaces, were announced on
Wednesday, 28 July.
Covering more than 18 acres, it is the eighth time Bitts Park
has been awarded a Green Flag. Hammond’s Pond has also been granted
the distinction for the sixth time, it is the fifth time that
Kingmoor Nature Reserve has received the award and Carlisle
Cemetery and Tullie House are four time winners. Stanwix Churchyard
has retained their award for the second time. Talkin Tarn is a
winner, after entering the competition for the first time.
