Countdown to parks celebration
Love Parks Week 2011 - Carlisle events

A packed nine-day programme of nearly 60 events will be held as
part of this year’s Carlisle City Council Love Parks
Week.
Events ranging from Tai Chi in the Cathedral grounds to the
welcome return of Flicks at Bitts, will be held between Saturday
23rd and Sunday 31st July 2011, coinciding with the first week of
the summer holidays. Events include:
Saturday, 23 July - Love Trees
This is the 'International Year of Forests', so celebrate the
launch of Carlisle Love Parks Week 2011 and the area's wonderful
trees, woods and forests by enjoying a city centre woodland
experience, with activities throughout the day.
Sunday, 24 July - River Caldew Guided Walk
Explore the River Caldew on this guided 8.5 mile walk of medium
difficulty. Meet by the footbridge at the southern end of Denton
Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle (CA2 5LJ). Please phone 01228 817158

Sunday, 24 July - Stagecoach Open-top Bus
Tours
11am and 2pm, starting and ending at Tullie House Museum, Castle
Street, Carlisle. Thanks to Stagecoach, we are delighted to invite
you to join us on one of two FREE guided open top bus tours of
historic Carlisle and its beautiful parks and green spaces.
Monday, 25 July - 'Cityhopper' Walk
A guided walk exploring the Kingmoor Nature Reserves (possibly
the oldest nature reserves in Britain) in partnership with Reays
'cityhopper' buses.
Monday, 25 July - Tai Chi in Chance's Park
Relax with the ancient and gentle Chinese art of Tai Chi.
Suitable for everyone, this expertly led taster session will cover
basic principles of posture, balance, relaxation and energising, to
teach a simple sequence of Tai Chi for you to try at home.
Tuesday 26 July - Party on the Plot
Gardening related fun and activities for all ages down on the
allotment, brought to you by 'Fit to Grow in Currock'.
Various days - 'On yer bike!'
A cycling taster-session for all-comers with an obstacle course
and a range of bikes to try, including tandems and tricycles.
Tuesday 26 July - Lakes Alive present 'The Banquet' at
Talkin Tarn
Lakes Alive present a banquet for one and all! Gather together
your family, friends and neighbours for an evening of amusement and
enchantment in the beguiling setting of Talkin Tarn Country
Park.
Wednesday 27 July - Waggy Walk
Go for a walk with one of Carlisle's Countryside Rangers and
'Happy Paws Dog Walking' as they devote time to 'man's best friend'
in Bitts Park. Get training advice as you walk. Ideal for
socialising both young and older dogs whilst enjoying the park.
Thursday 28 July - Forest Adventures in Chance's
Park
Celebrate 2011 as the 'International Year of Forests' with
bushcraft, adventure and outdoor activities for all ages with
ancient parkland of Chance's Park.
Thursday 28 July - Zumba in Portland Square
People of all shapes, sizes and ages can try this exhilarating,
easy-to-follow, Latin inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness craze
in Portland Square.
Friday 29 July - Orienteering at Hammond's
Pond
Join Border Liners for an orienteering event around beautiful
Hammond's Pond. You can progress at your own pace, walking, jogging
or running around the course of your choice.
Friday 29 July - Adults tennis taster
session
This general introduction to tennis for adults (age 16+) will be
delivered by a qualified LTA coach and tailored for
individuals.
Saturday 30 July - Carlisle Angling
Association
Have a go at fly fishing and bait fishing and improve your
fishing skills with qualified instructors. Try fly tying; learn
about wildlife of the River Eden with experts from Eden Rivers
Trust; and take part in competitions and a quiz at the end of the
day.
Saturday 30 July - Bandstand in Bitts Park
Carlisle’s new moveable Bandstand will be hosting a brass band
concert in the beautiful setting of the Victoria Gardens. Bring a
picnic and a rug and sit back to enjoy music in the great
outdoors.
Sunday 31 July - Flicks at Bitts
The finale to Carlisle Love Parks Week 2011 will be a FREE
open-air screening of two blockbuster films in Bitts Park -
Disney/Pixar's 'WALL-E' (Cert. U) and lively sing-along musical
'Grease' (Cert. PG)
There's lots more going on and all events are included in a
programme available from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre

the country providing opportunities for nearly half a million
people to get together outdoors and make the most of what our parks
offer.
