Yewdale Big Tidy Up
(Date of issue: Tuesday, 26 July 2011)
Work to clear up a local area in Carlisle is now underway.
As part of a Big Tidy Up campaign, Yewdale ward is getting a
comprehensive clean-up.
Carlisle City Council and partners have organised the work which
started on Monday, 25 August and will continue on until
Friday, 29 July.
In some areas, the City Council’s neighbourhood team will be
asking residents to move their vehicles, at certain times, so allow
mechanical sweeping to be done.
Carlisle City Council will be doing the following in the Yewdale
area during the Big Tidy Up week: additional road sweeping;
removing fly tipping; litter picking; removing fly posters;
removing graffiti; removing weeds; painting street furniture and
other general maintenance work.
The clear up has the support of ward councillors in Yewdale.
Cllr Fiona Robson, Conservative Yewdale Councillor, said:
“I decided to organise a Big Community Tidy Up following calls
from residents in my ward concerning elements “out of place” such
as litter, weeds, overhanging trees, rusty paintwork etc. The Area
Team for the West of the City already work exceptionally hard at
remedying these things. However, we thought we would work together
and dedicate an entire week of concentrating on this one area and
try to improve as many things as we can in that week. The people of
Yewdale have pride in the appearance of their houses and gardens,
so if anything is of a shoddy appearance in the public realm, it
looks more glaringly obvious. That is why we have to get it right.
I shall enjoy “getting my hands dirty” and actually working with
the Area Team and other volunteers on this project.”
Cllr Steven Bowditch, speaking on behalf of the Labour Yewdale
City Ward Councillors, said:
“The residents of Yewdale take great pride in their local
environment and show a lot of interest in keeping the area clean
and tidy. As a ward councillor, I’m pleased to see an event of this
type has been organised
