We’re Talkin Fun
Carlisle City Council Leader Cllr Mike Mitchelson, Cllr Ray
Bloxham portfolio holder for Environment and Infrastructure and
Cllr Barry Earp portfolio holder for Learning and Development
were on hand with pupils from Brampton Junior School to launch
new ways of exploring Talkin Tarn on Thursday, June 12, 2008, at
10.00am.
From Thursday young people will be able to try a host of new
activities, which include our brand new Numeracy Trail, which
includes a giant chess board to test their navigational skills and
a Geoboard designed to test their familiarity with co-ordinates and
geometrical shapes. The trail is a series of mathematical problems
for young people to solve whilst walking round the site testing
their skills in adding, subtracting, geometry and much more.
As well the Tarn’s brand new Numeracy Trail they are launching
their new pack of Environmental Education Programmes. The pack has
been sent out to over 60 local primary and junior schools to let
schools know how the facilities at the Tarn can be used to meet
National Curriculum targets for environmental education. New day
long programmes include Minibeast Magic, Come to Your Senses and
Designs for Life and qualified ranger staff are on hand to lead
these programmes for visiting schools should they wish.
City Council Leader Cllr Mike Mitchelson said:
‘’ this is another example of the investment and
continued development of this important public space, we are
constantly looking at ways of enhancing the experience of visitors
to the park which will continue to ensure that it develops and
evolves to meet new demands. The learning packages are an excellent
opportunity to build on the strong links we already have with
schools in the district and further cement this relationship.’’
