Carlisle tribute for fallen local hero
New city centre bench to be unveiled
(Date of issue: Monday, 1 June 2009)
One year after a 19-year-old local soldier was killed in the
line of duty in Afghanistan, a memorial bench will be unveiled in
his honour within Carlisle’s city centre.
Private David Murray of 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment,
died on June 8, 2008 and to mark the first anniversary of his
tragic death, his family and friends will meet to officially
dedicate the seat.
This will take place this Sunday (7 June) at 2pm. The bench will
be installed near to the City’s Memorial, next to the bandstand. A
plaque will be attached and reads:
"25204034 Pte David Murray, The Parachute
Regiment, 7th January 1989 to 8th June 2008. A Beloved Son,
Brother, Grandson, Nephew, Friend and Comrade in Arms.
"With Love We Remember You. A Little Guy With A
Big Heart. Forever In Our Thoughts And Always Loved."
The bench has been funded by Private Murray’s family through
donations.
Carlisle Rugby Club on Warwick Road, Carlisle will be hosting an
event for Private Murray’s family and friends after the service has
ended in the city centre.
