Eight international teams will be competing
for a ‘Cup of Nations’ on Sunday 4 July.
The alternative ‘World Cup’ event will be held
between 12noon - 3pm in Trinity school fields and has been
organised by ONE Culture with support from Carlisle City
Council.
Teams representing Poland; Bangladesh;
Pakistan; Turkey; England; Nepal and Greece will be taking part,
alongside a ‘cultural mix’ team made up of a Chinese; Romanian;
Tunisian; Libyan and Scottish players. All players are Cumbrian
residents, mostly based in the Carlisle area.
It is the second year running that the event
has been held and will form part of the Culture Bazaar, a free
community event planned for Sunday 4 July at Trinity School,
between 11am and 6pm.
Muhib Ali, from ONE Culture, said:
“Last year, a packed crowd watched the drama
unfold as Bangladesh came out winners, defeating a brave polish
team in an epic final which went to penalties!.
“The day was a huge success not only because of
the participating communities, but also the great spectators who
joined in to create a carnival atmosphere. People of all ages, all
cultures combining to make it a real festival of nations. We want
to make this year’s event one to remember!”
Koish Alom, founder of ONE Culture, said:
“Building on the success of last year’s event,
the Cup of Nations is a great opportunity to bring together a wide
range of people from different cultures and nationalities. We’ve
got around twelve different countries represented and it is set to
be a tournament not to be missed.”
The five-a-side tournament will be played over
two pitches. The matches will last for 15 minutes and the top two
teams from each group will play in the semi-finals and then the
final, to decide the overall winner, at around 3pm. A trophy and
medals will be presented to the winners.
