Castle Multi-Use Games Area
Work due to start on news sports area
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 15 June 2011)
Work will start on a new £140,000 sports area and play park at
the Old Trinity Church site, Caldewgate next Monday (20 June), at
10am.
This initiative has been funded through Carlisle City Council,
United Utilities Carlisle & Eden CDRP, Riverside Housing and
Cumbria County Council.
The build should take around 10 weeks to complete and children
from Caldew Lea School will be setting up a Facebook page to
include dates and pictures on how the build is going.
Once open, it is hoped that the organised activities delivered
by the City Council’s Well being team will give youngsters in the
area something positive to take part in and encourage them to stay
fit and healthy. As well as being marked out for football and
basketball, the new MUGA will be used to deliver other sports, such
as tennis and volleyball.
Carlisle City Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment
and Housing, said:
“This joint partnership approach is an opportunity to improve
facilities and to address local people’s concerns. This is another
example of positive action taken with our partners to make the
residents of Carlisle feel safe and secure. Providing facilities
for our young people helps to prevent the boredom factor and
possible anti-social behaviour.”
This will be the City Council’s fifth Multi Use Games Area
(MUGA) to be installed in the city. There are MUGAs at Dale End
Road, Harraby; Melbourne Road, Botcherby, Hammond’s Pond, Upperby
and Beck Field, Raffles. These areas are used regularly by around
1,000 children and adults each year and have helped to reduce anti
social behaviour in those areas.
The work will start on Monday, and aims to be completed by the
end of the summer. The work will be project managed by Carlisle
City Council.
