Extra places available for Carlisle sporting challenge
The countdown for next Sunday’s (16 March) Sainsbury’s Sport Relief event has started
and due to popular demand extra places have been made available for
the Carlisle event.
One hundred entries have already signed up for the Sainsbury’s
Sport Relief Mile, to be held at The Sheepmount, at 12noon.
Although prospective entrants are no longer able to register
online at the Sport Relief website, Carlisle City Council is
providing the opportunity for residents to register by contacting
them direct.
Carlisle City Council and the Schools Sports Partnership are
organising the local family event and are encouraging local
residents to rise to the sporting challenge by signing up now, to
guarantee a place for them and their family. To take part telephone
Carlisle City Council on 01228 817044.
You can complete the mile by walking, running, skipping,
bouncing a ball or in whatever sporty fashion you wish. Entry costs
are £5 for adults (16 and over), £2 for children (under 16) and a
family discount of £12 for two adults and two children.
The last time the national fund-raising day was held, in 2006, a
staggering 400,000 men, women and children did a Mile for Sport Relief – including Prince
William who ran at Sandhurst, giving his royal seal of approval.
The 2006 Carlisle event included more than 120 Carlisle
schoolchildren from 30 primary and junior schools.
The Carlisle event is one of more than 200 Sports Relief Mile
events across the UK.
Carlisle City Cllr Ray Knapton, Portfolio holder for Community
Engagement said:
"We’re delighted that Carlisle has been selected
to host this exciting event and it is great to hear that so many
people have already signed up. It was a huge success in 2006 and
we’re looking forward to seeing taking part, getting sponsored and
raising money for Sport Relief."
Sport Relief harnesses
the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better. By
doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can do good and
feel good. Comic Relief spends the money raised to help vulnerable
people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in
the world’s poorest countries. The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile
sits at the heart of the Sport Relief Weekend and is the ultimate
way to get involved.
