Treasurers’ presidential appointment for Director of Corporate
Services
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 11 March 2009)
Carlisle City Council’s Director of Corporate Services, Angela
Brown, has been appointed President of the Society of District
Council Treasurers.
Angela is one of the City Council’s four corporate directors and
is in charge of the City Council’s financial services, Council Tax,
Benefits, Audit and IT sections. She was voted in as President at a
society meeting in January. Grahame Lucas from Worcester City
Council was appointed Deputy President. In response to her
appointment, she said:
“The Society of District Council Treasurers acts
as a key source for all district council treasurers across the
country and actively lobbies national government, the Local
Government Association and other bodies to promote and protect the
interests of district councils.
“I am honoured to have been voted as the
Society’s President and will work hard during my term of office to
raise the profile of district councils at national government level
and ensure that the challenges we face are recognised
nationally.”
The Society of District Council Treasurers was formed in 1974
and currently represents 238 district council finance functions in
England and Wales. Outgoing President Mary Hawkins said:
“Angela was voted in as President of the Society
due to her experience, knowledge and expertise within local
government finance. Angela has been an active executive member of
the Society since 2004 and for much of that time she has acted as
the Society’s advisor on Financial Management and Local Authority
Accounting. She represents the Society on a variety of national
bodies and in particular is involved in the implementation of
International Financial Reporting Standards. We wish her every
success in her new role.”
Councillor Mike Mitchelson, Leader of Carlisle City Council,
said:
“We are fully supportive of Angela’s appointment
and see it as an opportunity to add further weight to our
discussions with central government on various financial issues and
particularly our low grant settlements over recent years.”
Councillor John Mallinson, Portfolio holder for Finance &
Performance Management, said:
“As well as being a significant personal
achievement, Angela’s appointment is also great coup for the City
Council. I wish her well in the role and hope that she finds the
role a valuable experience.”
Maggie Mooney, Carlisle City Council’s Town Clerk and Chief
Executive, added:
“I am really pleased that Angela has achieved
this national role. Not only is it an accolade for her and the City
Council, it also gives a really positive message to all our staff
and we are all proud of her.”
