Carlisle City Council By-Election
Additional seat to be contested at May local elections

A By-Election will be held in the Irthing ward in Carlisle,
following the retirement of Carlisle City Councillor Ray Knapton
due to ill health.
The By-Election will coincide with the Carlisle Local Elections
which are taking place on Thursday, 6 May 2010.
Carlisle City Council Elections will be held in: Belah; Belle
Vue; Brampton; Botcherby; Castle; Currock; Dalston; Denton Holme;
Harraby; Longtown & Rockcliffe; Morton; St Aidans; Stanwix
Rural; Stanwix Urban; Upperby; Wetheral and Yewdale wards.
One councillor will elected into each ward.
A Cumbria County Council By-Election for the Longtown and
Bewcastle division will also be held on 6 May.
Parish elections are scheduled to be held in the Parishes of
Dalston and St. Cuthbert Without on the same day unless the
Parliamentary General Election is held on that day in which case
the poll in the parish elections (if contested) will be postponed
until 27 May 2010.
The official Notice of Election for the City Council Elections
will be published this Friday (26 March 2010). Candidates have
until 12noon on Thursday 8 April to submit their nominations.
Details of candidates nominated will be available later on that
day.
Electors can submit applications to vote by post or change an
existing postal or proxy vote. Any such applications must reach the
Electoral Registration Officer at the Civic Centre by not later
than 5pm on Tuesday 20 April 2010.
Electors can also submit new applications to vote by proxy and
these applications must be submitted to the Election Registration
Officer by not later than 5pm on Tuesday 27 April 2010.
Applications to vote by proxy on the grounds of medical emergency
occurring after 5pm on 27 April can be submitted up until 5pm on 6
May 2010.
Postal and Proxy voting application forms are available from the
Civic Centre or via the City Council website – www.carlisle.gov.uk
Polling hours for the elections will be between 7am and
10pm.
