Keep it clean

Countdown to clear up campaign

(Date of issue: Thursday, 3 March 2011)

Stanwix, Carlisle is only days away from a Big Tidy Up!

A wide range of community groups and local volunteers have signed up to take part in a Stanwix Big Tidy Up event, starting next Monday (7 March).

Local school children, students, sports groups, church volunteers and community groups have all pledged their support. Local residents are also being asked to lend a hand by taking part in a community litter-pick. This will be held on Saturday, 12 March, between 10am and 3pm.

Anyone that wants to take part, should meet at Stanwix Community Association Hut, Church Street, Stanwix at 10am.

All equipment will be provided by the City Council. Anyone interested in taking part, should contact 01228 618556 or 01228 817200 for more information.

Between Monday, 7 March and Saturday, 12 March, Carlisle City Council and partners, are planning a comprehensive clean-up of the Stanwix area and are asking the local community to lend a hand.

Cllr Elizabeth Mallinson, Ward Councillor for Stanwix Urban, said:

"I’m so proud that our community has backed this Big Tidy Up campaign. From all ages – school children to students, and not forgetting the adults! All have pledged their support. This is a brilliant opportunity for local residents to lend their support and follow the lead of local community groups who have already signed up to take part.”

So far, the following groups have offered up their help during the week-long Tidy Up:

  • Stanwix Primary School – litter pick in St Michael’s Church grounds and have also took part in a poster competition promoting the Big Tidy Up week
  • University of Cumbria (whose students are planning a ‘Wednesday in the Woods!’ litter picking event on Wednesday, 9 March at 10am).
  • On Monday, 7 March between 7am and 10am, students/residents will also be asked not to park on Tarraby Lane to allow highways improvements to be made
  • Glenmore Trust (Healthland’s Helping Hands) – litter pick around Eden Bridge gardens and Clarke’s Field on Thursday, 10 March, starting at 10am.
  • Friends of Rickerby Park – litter pick in park on Saturday, 12 March.
  • Trinity scouts (cubs, brownies, guides and adult volunteers) and Boys Brigade
  • Cricket Club (young cricketers will litter pick the path from the club gate to Etterby Street on Saturday, 12 March)
  • Probation Service
  • Stanwix Community Association
  • St Augstine’s parish volunteers
  • St Michael’s parish volunteers.

During the Big Tidy Up week, the City Council will be asking residents to move their vehicles, at certain times, so allow mechanical sweeping to be done.

In addition to the litter picking event, Carlisle City Council will also be doing the following in the Stanwix area during the Big Tidy Up week: additional road sweeping; litter picking; removing fly posters; removing graffiti; cleaning gullies; shrub bed maintenance; removing weeds; minor highway repairs and other general maintenance work.
