Planning Carlisle’s Future
Residents asked for their say
(Date of issue: Thursday, 17 March 2011)
Local residents and businesses still have the chance to have
their say on how Carlisle should be developed over the next 20
years.
Carlisle City Council is replacing its Local Plan with a new
style Local Development Framework and is asking Carlisle residents
and businesses to give their views.
The closing date for responses is looming – Thursday, 31 March.
More than 250 completed questionnaires have already been received,
providing some valuable feedback on the Key Issues Paper and
highlighting the issues that are important to the residents of the
District.
In addition to a leaflet being sent to every household,
information is also available at neighbourhood forums, from the
Civic Centre’s Customer Contact Centre, from your local library and
the Carlisle City Council’s website - www.carlisle.gov.uk.
If you have not received your leaflet or would like to receive
another copy, please telephone 01228 817193.
The City Council is reminding residents that there is still time
to comment on what they think the key planning issues are for them.
They also want to find out what they like about Carlisle and how it
could be improved.
Three headings gather together all the key issues which the City
Council feels are important for the future growth and development
of Carlisle:
- Social – Housing; support services in rural areas; health and
services for older and young people;
- Economic – Creating jobs; education; new technology; leisure;
retail and tourism;
- Environmental – Transport; reducing pollution; green spaces;
conservation and flood risk.
The leaflet seeks local views on the following questions:
- What do you want your area to look like in 20 years times?
- How do you think we can make this happen?
· Has the City Council identified all the important issues that
you think affect Carlisle?
- Are there any issues that you feel will need to be addressed in
the future?
The responses received will help to shape a document called the
Core Strategy. This will be part of the Local Development Framework
for Carlisle which will replace the current Local Plan.
A more detailed document, the Key Issues Paper, is available by

The consultation feedback will be considered and used in the
next stage of the Core Strategy. This will go out to consultation
in autumn 2011.
