Daryll Morrison the owner of The Glasshouse said:
‘‘winning this award means everything to me, I
didn’t expect it. It goes to show that Carlisle isn’t just a one
street City. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my
parents, the hard work of all of my staff and the door security
team. It’s nice to be recognised for the all the hard work we put
into running the place. I have learnt something from every bar I’ve
worked in and that learning process has helped me get this award,
roll on next year.’’
Nearly 200 people attended the glitzy awards ceremony at
Carlisle Racecourse on night of Tuesday 20 to find out who had won
the top prize for each area, raising just short of £2,000 for the
CFM charity Cash For Kids. The intention is now to build on the
success of this year’s Best Bar None awards and roll the scheme out
to even more venues across both Districts during 2008/09.

Councillor Olwyn Luckly portfolio holder for Health and
Communities said:
"Thirty-two licensees from the city and town
centre pubs, clubs and bars in Carlisle and Penrith entered the
Best Bar None Scheme this year. The assessments were carried out by
trained staff from Cumbria Police and the two local Councils. They
looked at how the premises operate and how that fits with the
licensing objectives – to prevent anti-social behaviour, crime and
disorder, public nuisance, and promotes public safety and the
protection of children.’’
Leader of Carlisle City Council Cllr Mike Mitchelson said:
"I am delighted with the response of local
licensees to the Best Bar None Awards Scheme. Congratulations to
The Glass House the Best Bar None overall winner for Carlisle and
District. This scheme encourages licensees to act responsibly and
take pride in their premises and surroundings and, in doing so, put
something back into the their town / city and local community.
‘’ The effort of all of the participants is
highly commendable bringing lots of rewards for licensees
including, the prestige of being part of the awards scheme,
increased business in the area and lower insurance premiums
resulting from the fact that they are running safer establishments.
However the biggest winners of the Awards Scheme are local people
and visitors, who benefit from a more welcoming, attractive, lively
and above all safe place to visit.’’
