City Council celebrates National Learning at Work Day

To celebrate National Learning at Work Day (Thursday, 22 May), Carlisle City Council has organised a ‘Learning for Life’ event for all its staff.

A variety of events, for all employees to sample, will be held at the City Council’s two main operational bases at the Civic Centre and Bousteads Grassing. The following will be on offer:

  • information on what training courses are available (NVQs, literacy, numeracy and IT);
  • the chance to meet Union Learning representatives;
  • the chance to talk to Carlisle College about their courses;
  • advice on ways to eat healthier;
  • try out one of Carlisle Leisure Limited's spinning bikes;
  • get a free Indian head massage; and
  • free refreshments.

A general knowledge quiz sheet with the chance to win a four-month Sands Centre fitness voucher (worth £100), a two-month Sands Centre fitness voucher (worth £50) and a £20 Chivers' voucher will also be on offer. Taster sessions in Polish and Spanish will also be available at the Bousteads Grassing event.

The Civic Centre event will be held between 10am - 1pm and the Bousteads Grassing event will be held between 1pm – 4pm.

To coincide with Adult Learners’ Week (17 –23 May), Carlisle City Council invited local residents along to a city centre celebration of learning event earlier this week (Tuesday, 20 May). Visitors to the event in the city centre’s pedestrianised area, in front of the Old Town Hall, were able to meet experts from around 20 organisations. In addition to formal learning, informal learning, including volunteering and community involvement was all celebrated.

Some of Carlisle City Council’s senior Managers have also taken time out of their diaries to ‘go back to the floor’ this week. Deputy Chief Executive, Jason Gooding shadowed the City Council’s Health & Safety Manager; Director of Community Services, Mike Battersby spent time at the Customer Contact Centre; Catherine Elliot, Director of Development Services met visitors at the city centre Tourist Information Centre and Angela Brown, Director of Corporate Services spent time with her IT staff and her benefits staff.
