Take part in General and Local Elections
(Date of issue: Tuesday, 4 May 2010)
Carlisle City Council is urging local residents to make their
mark and take up their right to vote at this Thursday’s (6 May)
General and Local Elections.
In addition to the Parliamentary Elections, a third of the City
Council seats will be contested and local residents will be given
the opportunity to choose which candidate should serve their ward.
One City Councillor will be elected to serve each of the following
17 wards of the City:
Belah; Belle Vue; Brampton; Botcherby; Castle; Currock; Dalston;
Denton Holme; Harraby; Longtown & Rockcliffe; Morton; St
Aidans; Stanwix Rural; Stanwix Urban; Upperby; Wetheral and Yewdale
wards.
A By-Election will also be held in Irthing ward and on the same
polling day, in addition to a County Council By-Election for the
Longtown and Bewcastle division.
Preparations are now well underway for the elections. Poll cards
have been sent to all eligible voters with information on where
their polling station is. All polling stations open at 7am and
close at 10pm.
The Returning Officer for the elections, Maggie Mooney -
Carlisle City Council’s Town Clerk & Chief Executive, said:
“We want as many voters as possible to come out
and make their mark. Local government provides a wide-range of
services to residents and elections allow them the opportunity to
have their say.”
The Elections will be held on Thursday, 6 May 2010. The General
Election count will be held at The Sands Centre, on the same
evening. The first ballot boxes are expected to arrive soon after
the polling stations close at 10pm. The City Council Election Count
will take place at The Sands Centre on Friday, 7 May from 11am
onwards.
