Open invitation to public event
(Date of issue: Friday, 14 May 2010)
The chance to find out more about a new multi-million pound
community development is available next Tuesday (18 May) at special
event held at Tullie House.
An open invitation has been sent to residents and interest
groups who want to find out about the new Shaddongate Community
Resource and Training Centre. The new development will be built on
land currently used as Shaddongate car park behind John Street
Hostel.
A multi-agency working group including Carlisle City Council,
Cumbria Constabulary, health, housing and advisory services drew
together the designs for the new £3million development, with
support from the local community, who attended consultation events
last summer.
The public event will be held next Tuesday (18 May), between
10.30am and 3pm at Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery. Organised
by Carlisle City Council, the event aims to let local residents and
agencies know more about the development and how the local
community can play their part in its future management
arrangements.
The housing scheme is part funded by a £1.89million grant from
the Government’s Places for Change scheme, Richard Cunningham
representing the Places for Change programme will be one of the key
speakers at next week’s event. The programme is as follows:

of Centre to Carlisle – Cllr Olwyn Luckley (Portfolio
Holder)
- Overview of Hostel Capital Improvement Programme and what it
means for Carlisle – Richard Cunningham (Places of Change
Programme, Homes & Community Agency)
- Importance of interagency / partnership working & regional
examples of good practice – Paul Connery (North West regional

Council)
- 12pm – 3pm Refreshments, a chance to look at the plans, talk to
agencies involved so far, give feedback / suggestions, and register
your interest in getting involved in the development of the
centre.
Carlisle City Cllr Olwyn Luckley, Portfolio holder for Health
and Community Development, said:
"The new facilities are innovative and forward
looking, both in their design and the vision of what they can
provide. The aim is to address the short and long term needs of
homeless people as well as providing a much needed community
resource.
"We want local residents to play a part in its
future management arrangements, as the new centre aims to provide
support and facilities to the wider community, as well as those you
are homeless."
The £3million Carlisle City Council scheme will follow an
innovative ‘green’ design and will include energy efficient
construction methods. Apprenticeships in Construction Skills will
be also available during the building of the centre.
The facilities would be available for the community’s use as
well as residents who require homelessness support. The plans
include:
- Access to health advisory services for local residents;
- Improving and creating links to local groups and services;
- Access to learning and development;
- Support, mentoring and coaching services;
- A furniture and clothing resource centre;
- A community hall and commercial kitchen; and
- A bike project.
The potential for the development of a community cafe has also
been put forward as part of the plans.
Work is due to start on the scheme, which will also see
improvement works made to John Street Hostel, this July and is
likely to take around 18 months to complete.
Anyone unable to attend next week's event, but who would like to
know more about the scheme, should contact Carlisle City Council on
