BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend
Advice on how to have fun, but stay safe
(Date of issue: Wednesday, 11 May 2011)
With the countdown well underway for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend
in Carlisle, ticket holders are being offered some sound
advice.
BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is the first major British music
festival of the year and always attracts big UK and worldwide
artists. This year, it will take place at Carlisle Airport on
Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May. There will be live music across four
stages, music and activities from the two-day event all covered on:
Radio 1, BBC TV, on the Radio 1 web and mobile sites as well as on
the red button from BBC Digital TV Channels.
Carlisle Tourism Partnership and Carlisle City Council have
drawn together a comprehensive list of top tips, to ensure that the
event’s a great success:
- The Big Weekend is free, but please remember to bring your
ticket. A large crowd is expected, so allow plenty of time to get
to the venue. There will be security checks as people arrive on the
site, so bring along some photo ID. After the concert is over it’s
likely to take a while for everybody to leave the site – so please
be patient.
- No food or drink can be taken into the site - with the
exception of personal supplies of water in a plastic container with
an unbroken seal (up to 500 ml per person), or special medical
supplies (please bring a Doctor’s note if these are not obviously
medicinal).
- Food and alcohol will be on sale inside the venue, however if
you look under 21 please do not be offended if you are asked for
proof of age when buying alcohol. The only forms of ID acceptable
will be a photo driving licence or a passport.
- Pre-plan your travel arrangements to ensure safe return to and
from the site. Public car parking will be available on site and a
shuttle bus service will be provided from many areas of the county.
There is also a drop off and pick up area for Private Taxis,
Hackney Carriages and cars.
- There are no designated footways on many of the approach roads
to the event location and traffic management will be in place for
the duration of the event. Therefore walking to and from the event
is strongly discouraged.
- Come prepared for all weather! Make sure your clothes are
weather proof and warm enough for when you leave the site.

event.
