Boost to Carlisle’s economy
Carlisle is set to receive a boost to the local economy this
weekend when it hosts the finale of a prestigious UK car rally.
The city has been confirmed as the finishing venue for the
‘Roger Albert Clark Rally’ - named in honour of the former RAC
Champion driver. Following on the back of the 750 delegate Rotary
conference and the Fireshow, this high profile event is yet another
boost to the local economy. An estimated 50 historic rally cars
will take part in the rally along with supporters and support
staff. The event is likely to attract thousands of spectators.
After almost 1,000 arduous miles competitors taking part in this
year’s Roger Albert Clark Rally will be waved over the finish line
by The Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Mallinson on
Monday (19 November) afternoon, at approximately 3pm, outside the
Tourist Information Centre in Carlisle’s city centre.
Starting this Saturday (17 November) in Leeds, the rally drivers
will first see action in the best of the Yorkshire forests. The
following day will see them in action around Dumfries and in the
notorious Kielder Forest complex.
Recreating the old RAC Rally’s of the 1960’s and 1970’s, in
period rally cars, this is the fourth year the event has been
organised by de Lacy Motor Club of West Yorkshire and it has found
a niche in the rally calendar for competitors and spectators
alike.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Mike Mitchelson said:
"Over the last four years, the Council has
supported the organisers of the Roger Albert Clark Rally with their
arrangements and have helped it develop into a successful event.
We’re pleased to welcome them back and are delighted to be chosen
as the venue for the finish. It will help raise the profile of the
city nation-wide.
"We have a rich heritage of rally driving in the
region and this event will generate great opportunities for local
business and tourism with competitors and fans coming from all over
the UK staying for two consecutive nights within the city".
Coverage of the event is available on ITV4 and other digital
channels.
