St Aidan’s residents the latest to benefit from trial
(Date of issue: Monday, 23 November 2009)
Around 3,200 St Aidan’s households will soon be getting an early
Christmas gift from Carlisle City Council – a ‘hat’ for their
recycling greenbox.
The reusable green ‘box hats’ stretch over the top over the
greenbox to make sure that the contents – paper, glass, tins and
cans - do not fall out or blow away and stay dry.
Carlisle City Council first trialled the ‘box hats’ in parts of
Denton Holme and Scotby, late last year. More than 2,000 hats were
given out to local householders.
Deliveries of the box hats to St Aidan’s householders started
earlier this month and should be completed by mid-December. Each
property will receive a leaflet advising them about the trial and
informing them how to request a box hat if they missed the original
distribution. They will also be advised to tie the box hat on to
the greenbox.
Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Environment and
Infrastructure, said:
“The box hats make sure that the greenbox
contents – paper, glass, tins and cans - do not fall out or blow
away and stay dry. The trial in Denton Holme and Scotby proved to
be a success and was well received by local residents. We’re hoping
to secure funding to extend it to other areas of the city, starting
with St Aidan’s.”
The pilot Denton Holme and Scotby schemes were funded by
Carlisle City Council, the expansion scheme for St Aidan’s will be
funded by Encams and the Cumbria Strategic Waste Partnership.
