Winter warmer support for local residents
(Date of issue: Monday, 30 November 2009)
Residents living in the Denton Holme area of Carlisle, who are
aged 70 years or older, will be able to receive a free winter
‘survival kit’ next Wednesday (9 December).
The packs include items, which are useful in the event of
extreme weather, including information from the City Council,
Police and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, a torch, heat gel
packs, thermal gloves, insulating blanket and helpful information
sheets. Proof of age may be requested.
Residents will also be able to get information on how to improve
the Energy Efficiency of their property; hear how they can access
grants for Disabled Facilities and Minor Works, and learn about the
Handyperson Scheme that the City Council operates.
The packs will be distributed at Denton Holme Community Centre,
Morley Street, between 10am and 3pm.
The event has been funded and organised by Carlisle City
Council.
Carlisle City Cllr Olwyn Luckley, Portfolio Holder for Health
and Community Development, said:
“It is estimated that there around 500 residents
within the Denton Holme area could be eligible for the Keep Warm,
Keep Safe packs. We hope that they take up the offer of
support.”
Carlisle City Councillor Paul Atkinson representing Denton Holme
Ward Councillors, said:
"This is a great opportunity for Denton Holme
residents to get advice and support direct from various agencies –
including the City Council, Police and Fire Service. The free packs
will also help make sure that some of our most vulnerable residents
are prepared for winter.”
