Frozen Water

Stay safe this Winter

(Date of issue: Friday, 26 November 2010)

Carlisle City Council is urging visitors to local parks not to walk onto frozen water.

Hammond’s Pond, Talkin Tarn and in extreme freezing temperatures, the Hardwicke Circus water fountain, can freeze round the edges. It may look like the ice is thick enough to walk or skate on, but this is often not true and could be dangerous. The ice can be very thin and break easily.

Signs have already been put up in Hammond’s Pond warning visitors of the dangers of walking on the pond.

A City Council spokesperson said:

“Signs are in place warning people not to walk on the pond ice. The irrigation system introduced to stop the build up of algae, means that some parts of the pond are susceptible to thin ice which can break under pressure.

“We would like to remind visitors to the park not to endanger themselves by walking on the pond and to adhere at all times to the warning signs. The issue of dogs running onto the frozen pond is also a common problem and we would also remind dog owners to keep a watchful eye on their pets.”
