Botcherby – reduce rubbish and recycle more
Scheme proves to be success
(A campaign to encourage Botcherby residents to recycle more and
reduce the amount of rubbish they put out for collection has proved
to a resounding success.
As part of a new waste reduction campaign, staff from Carlisle
City Council and Resource Cumbria visited properties within the
Botcherby area to see what help they need to recycle more of their
household waste. The campaign was supported by Riverside Carlisle.
The visits started in late July and ended in mid-October.
To encourage residents to recycle more, residents were provided
with: additional recycling containers (if needed); free covers for
their Greenbox (to reduce the risk of materials being blown away
from the container); a copy of their recycling calendar, so they
know when to put their recycling out for collection; and offered a
‘waste audit’ so that that they can see what can be recycled.
The campaign has resulted in:
- A reduction in the amount of refuse being put out for
collection – on 22 July 22.42 tonnes was collected and on 30
September, 20.06 tonnes was put out for collection – equating to a
refuse reduction of 2.36 tonnes;
- A 31% reduction in the number of refuse bins being placed
out;
- 30 new properties are now recycling; and
- 145 Greenbags and 95 Greenboxes were handed out
Carlisle City Cllr Ray Bloxham, Portfolio holder for Local
Environment and Housing, said:
“The aim of the campaign was to encourage residents to recycle
more using their kerbside greenbox, greenbag and garden waste
collections. Overall Carlisle has a great track record and we are
one of the best performing recycling areas in the UK, but we are
always striving to increase the amount of waste we recycle.”
Since the introduction of a new look waste collection scheme in
Carlisle in March 2007, Carlisle City Council has expanded the
range of materials that can be recycled. This includes plastic,
cardboard, glass, paper and garden waste. Paper; glass bottles and
jars; and tins and cans and empty aerosol cans can all be recycled
within a greenbox.
Carlisle is currently one of the best recycling cities in the
North West.
