New welcome for rail passengers
(Date of issue: Thursday, 17 November 2011)
A smart new welcome now greets rail passengers making a visit to
Carlisle.
Platform four, located near the entrance/exit area at the
Citadel Railway Station, now includes a spectacular new display
highlighting all the city’s key tourist attractions, retail areas
and places of interest.
The Carlisle City Council Tourist Information Point is a welcome
addition to the new look station and replaces one installed around
seven years ago. It reflects the city’s unique historic and
contemporary offer whilst highlighting our Roman heritage.
It includes an easy to navigate 3D map of the city centre and
features a (lenticular) panel which fluctuates between two scenes –
Roman Soldiers on Hadrian’s Wall and a family day out at Carlisle
Castle.
The new www.discovercarlisle.co.uk website is also highlighted
alongside social media sites Facebook and Twitter, which also
promote Carlisle.
Cllr Marilyn Bowman, Portfolio holder for Economic Development,
said:
“The new Tourist Information Point provides a spectacular
welcome to Carlisle. Our city has lots to offer and all our key
tourist attractions are now promoted to visitors in a clear and
inviting way. I’d like to thank our partners, including Carlisle
Citadel Station, for all their support. This new initiative puts
us, quite literally, on the map!”
The Lanes Shopping Centre and Tullie House Museum & Art
Gallery have provided a contribution towards the panels.
Michelle Wiggins, Audience Development Manager, Tullie House
Museum & Art Gallery added:
“Tullie House feel that it is important that visitors arriving
by train can immediately appreciate the cultural heritage Carlisle
has to offer.”
Stuart Davison, the Virgin Trains Station Manager at Carlisle,
said: “The historic station is where increasing numbers of visitors
first set foot in this wonderful city. It is important to give them
a good first impression and the new panel will help do just that,
welcoming tourists to Carlisle with useful information about local
tourist attractions."
