Healthy City status in October 2009.
Cllr Jacquelyne Geddes, Portfolio holder for Community
Engagement, said:
“A Healthy City is about addressing local issues and
making a conscious effort to improve health. Many different
organisations have an impact on health at a variety of levels and
our Healthy City Week programme has brought together a variety of
organisations all striving to promote and encourage health and
wellbeing activities. Healthy City Week will allow local residents
to meet up with health experts and learn more about how they could
improve their fitness and general well-being.”
Jane Muller is an Associate Director of Public Health for NHS
Cumbria. She said:
“The Healthy City Week is a great opportunity to
provide people across the Carlisle area with an introduction to
simple ways to improve their health and wellbeing. I hope that the
wide range of different activities will provide something which
appeals to different people regardless of age or current activity
levels.
“Being a Healthy City means that decision makers across
Carlisle must promote the importance of health and wellbeing and
ensure that it is taken into consideration when making decisions
which will affect the local population. This week is a
demonstration of how we’re all working together to make this
happen, but it is also important that everyone thinks how they can
make a few small changes to live a healthier life.”
In addition to the public events, a series of seminars aimed at
key stakeholders and local politicians will be held. These will
focus on Get into Reading; Growing a Healthy City; Preventing Young
People Smoking; and Healthy Urban Planning. These are all key
themes of Healthy City phase five and the Carlisle Healthy City:
Health Improvement Action Plan.
