Winners revealed!

The winners of the 2011 Carlisle Sports Awards have been announced.

The inaugural Carlisle Sports Awards was held last Saturday (8 October) at The Sands Centre. The sporting event celebrated the outstanding talent, commitment and success of Carlisle sportspeople.

As part of the build up to the event, a staggering 75 nominations were received and the winners were revealed on Saturday evening.

The Carlisle Sports Awards were organised by Carlisle City Council and Carlisle Sports Council. The winners were:

  • JUNIOR PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR – Exceptional Rising Star – sponsored by Lambert Gill

Awarded to the person demonstrating the highest achievement within their chosen sport.

Winner: Kathryn Routledge (16 years old) - Water Polo player

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Anna Armstrong (Cycling) and Jim Atkinson (Football)

  • RISING STAR x 3 – sponsored by News & Star

Awarded to three talented athletes who have demonstrated their potential through achievements during the last year.

Winners: Anna Armstrong (10 years old) – Cyclist; Jim Atkinson (16 years old) – Football and Tom Grieve (15 years old) – Water Polo

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Chelsea Nugent (13 years old) – Athletics; Sam Routledge (15 years old) – Water Polo and Connor Dixon (7 years old) – Multi- Sport Disability

  • JUNIOR TEAM OF THE YEAR - Best Team Achievement – sponsored by Vanessa Foster

Awarded to the team demonstrating the highest sporting achievement within their chosen sport.

Winner: Upperby Park FC U12

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Robert Ferguson Girls Kwik Cricket and Stanwix Boys Kwik Cricket

  • TEAM OF THE YEAR - Best Team Achievement – sponsored by McKnight & Son

Awarded to the team demonstrating the highest sporting achievement within their chosen sport.

Winner: Carlisle Hockey Women’s 1st Team

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Hockey Ladies 035 and Northbank FC U18

  • DISABILITY PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - Excelled beyond barriers – sponsored by Carlisle Angling Association

Awarded to a person with a disability demonstrating the highest achievement within their sport

Winner: Anna Nicholson (16 years old) – Athletics (Discus)

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Nathaniel Pattinson (15 years old) – Wheelchair Basketball) and William Swailes (17 years old) – Football

Special Mention: Emma Goodchild (17 years old) – Boccia/Athletics and Ella Cooper (11 years old) – swimming

  • COACH OF THE YEAR - Delivering Exceptional impact – sponsored by Carlisle Squash Club

Awarded to the coach that can demonstrate significant impact upon participants at any level during the last year.

Winner: Andrew Little – Water Polo

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Frank Davidson – Athletics (Track) and Lee Burrell - Tennis

Special Mention: Donald Cape - Squash

  • VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - Greatest Volunteer Contribution – sponsored by Carlisle City Council

Awarded to the volunteer that can demonstrate significant impact to a club, sporting organisation during the last year.

Winner: Melanie Pattinson – Wheelchair Basketball, plus other sports

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Dianne Beattie – Wheelchair Tennis, plus other sports and Kevin Dobinson - Football

  • YOUNG LEADER OF THE YEAR - Extra Talented Leadership – sponsored by Nortech Communications

Awarded to the young person who can demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities within sport during the last year.

Winner: Liam Jackson – Football

Shortlisted (Special Mention): William Hayes - Cricket

  • SERVICE TO SPORT - Extra Dedicated Service – sponsored by Active Cumbria

Awarded to the person demonstrating outstanding commitment and dedication to sport over a long period of time, be it as a participant, coach, volunteer or official.

Winners: Mike Dodd – Rowing; John Williamson – Football and Frank Davidson – Athletics (Track)

Special Mention: Colin Nixon – Boxing and Ronnie Witt – Angling

  • SPECIAL AWARD - Extra Special Achievement – sponsored by Nichol Signs

Awarded at the discretion of the Judging Panel to an outstanding achievement or nomination not receiving an award in another category.

Winner: Matthew Salkeld – Squash and Athletics

  • PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - Best Individual Performance – sponsored by Carlisle Leisure Limited

Awarded to the individual or team that has achieved the most outstanding performance during the last year.

Winner: Nicholas Miller – Athletics (Hammer)

Shortlisted (Special Mention): Angela Kelly – Athletics and Lauren Smith - Badminton

Awarded to the person demonstrating the highest achievement within their chosen sport.

Winner: Craig Goodfellow – Golf
