Carlisle Communities for Health
Public events aim to make residents healthier
A series of public events that aim to improve the health of
local residents will be held in community buildings over the next
six months, starting this October in Longtown.
Organised by the Carlisle Partnership Healthy Communities and
Older People Priority Group, the public events have been arranged
after Carlisle City Council received £100,000 grant funding from
the Department of Health. Cllr Judy Prest, Portfolio holder for
Health and Wellbeing said:
The events will focus on promoting and developing
healthier communities in some of the most deprived and isolated
areas in Carlisle and will raise awareness of local health advice
and support available. We hope they are a success for all
concerned.
The programme begins with a large launch event this Friday (28
September) at Brunton Park which will include the Director of
Public Health, Professor John R Ashton CBE as the Guest Speaker and
a speech from Associate Director of Public Health, Jane Muller on
'Local Health in Cumbria'. The programme will start at 10am and is
expected to end at around 1pm. Around 70 representatives from the
health and community sectors are expected to attend the event.
John Ashton, Director of Public Health, Cumbria Primary Care
Trust:
Over the next few months, when we will be asking
the public for their views on proposals to develop health services
in north Cumbria, it is important that we keep sight of the support
that people need to make healthy choices about their own health.
These events will play a vital role in showcasing the many ways
that people in Carlisle can take action to improve their
health.
The six local public events will carry on from this Friday's and
have been organised by Cumbria CVS:
All events will have free refreshments, free samples and tasters
and booking is requested for catering purposes. Telephone Cumbria
CVS on 01228 512513.
The first event, held at Longtown next Wednesday (3 October)
between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, will include a healthy cooking
demonstration by John Crouch at 5pm, a tour of the community gym,
demonstrations and displays from the youth groups' bike project,
Age Concern's rural health project and information on a range of
support services including telecare, the smoking cessation service
and others.
Lynne Hutchinson, Cumbria CVS Locality Manager said:
This programme of events is great way to give
local people access to the support they need to make informed
choices that can improve their own health and quality of life.
Cumbria CVS has worked with a range of partner organisations and
local people to put together a programme that highlights
opportunities on peoples own doorstep as well as showcasing some of
the excellent activities available".
